Do you know our raw material?
Silicon, or technically PDMS (polydimethylsiloxamo), is obtained from silicon dioxide and its further transformation into elemental silicon. The silicon reacts with methyl chloride CH3Cl in the presence of a copper catalyst. The dimethyldichlorosilane Si(CH3)2Cl2 resulting from this reaction is separated by distillation and hydrolyzed to OH-terminated linear siloxanes. They are polymerized and increased with mineral fillers such as silica and additives, thus obtaining the silicone rubber we know.
